This week, Ks2 delved into to the significance of the tragic death of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 – a death after a unprovoked racist attack. The significance of this death was startling in so many ways, aside for the awful loss for Stephen’s friends and family.
In assembly, we discussed:
- what motivates racist opinions
- the passion, fight and commitment of Stephen’s family in getting justice
- whether racism is still in the police organisation
- the shocking delay between the death of Stephen, to when 2 people received their prison sentence
- thinking like a historian – focusing on cause and consequence
- the impact on the National Curriculum and how we have to learn about racism in schools so that we live in a respectful and tolerant society
Please discuss this at home and keep asking questions: be curious, show integrity and fight for what is the right thing.
