Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Islamic Art – Year 6

1st February 2023 in Creative Team, Year 6
Over the last week, the children in Year 6 have been creating their own mosaics inspired by Islamic designs. Over the course of the week, we learnt all about Islamic designs looking at their geometric, repeating patterns and the places where they might be found. We had a go at imitating these designs using collage.
Then we spent some time learning some different collage and paper sculpture techniques – we loved experimenting with curling paper and creating intricate patterns. Have a look at some of our amazing sketchbook pages.
After this, we used a website to create our own lslamic designs, making sure we created geometric designs with repeating patterns and motifs, just like the Islamic designs we had looked at earlier in the week.
To finish, we all took our designs and turned them into mosaics using our collage techniques. Have a look at our outcomes – they are just fantastic!
At home, make sure you ask us questions like:
  • Where are Islamic designs often found?
  • What are the features of Islamic designs?
  • What is a mosaic?
  • How would you describe a geometric design?
