Computing

Where learning is fuelled by creativity

What is computing?

Computing is the process of using computers and computer technology to solve problems, perform tasks, create new products and design services. It encompasses a broad range of activities, but broadly computing involves the use of algorithms and programming languages to perform a wide range of tasks. The computing curriculum is split into three main sections:

  • Digital Literacy – the skills, knowledge and understanding needed in order to participate fully and safely in an increasingly digital world.
  • Computer Science – How computers and computer systems work and how they are designed and programmed.
  • Information Technology – The purposeful use of existing programs to develop products and solutions.

Our Intent at TMS in computing  is that children:

  • explore computing through the disciplines of computer science,  information technology and digital literacy
  • use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world
  • link to the disciplines in maths, science and design and technology, linking with material and artificial systems
  • can understand and apply concepts of computer science: abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • can analyse problems and have experience of writing computer programs to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent and confident users of information technology in a digitally advancing world
  • learn explicitly what is presented on the TMS launchpads

Computing is implemented by:

  • creating clear sequential learning led by the TMS launchpads
  • ensuring that there is 5-7 hours of computing learning per unit. There is clarity whether computing is used to support other curriculum areas, or whether it is computing learning, whilst also being linked to STAR learning.

The impact of learning in computing is assessed by:

  • children being able to talk about their learning.
  • children having opportunities to ‘show what you know’.
  • the quality of the outcomes saved on individual workspaces and in class folders on the school drive.
  • pupil conferencing
