PE

Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Children are explicitly taught a variety of expected values to ensure they feel safe and confident while engaging in PE. The class teacher or coach will include these in the success criteria along with the physical skill and substantive knowledge in every lesson.

Our Intent at TMS in PE is that children:

  • are inspired to succeed in the PE curriculum, in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.
  • display taught values such as determination, passion, respect, honesty, self belief, teamwork.
  • learn through physical literacy: agility, balance, coordination, applying physical skills, health and fitness, and personal, social and creative (across the curriculum)
  • can swim 25 meters by the end of KS2
  • learn explicit skills and values set out in the scheme of learning.

PE is implemented by:

  • clear sequential learning that makes all learners feel progression.
  • setting Aspirational goals for children in PE.
  • ensuring that there is 2 hours of learning per week, led by the class teacher or sports coaches.
  • 10 swimming sessions on consecutive days  in Y4/5/6
  • There are clubs, festivals and competitions to complement the PE curriculum.

The impact of learning in PE is assessed by:

  • children being able to talk about their learning in PE
  • children being able to show the intended skills in PE lessons and in clubs
  • creative wheel assessed (by TPAT) completed twice a year
  • a higher number of children being active and attended extracurricular clubs
  • participation and enjoyment in festival and competitions
  • launch lesson aimed to assess the key knowledge children will need to access the next unit of learning

Swimming @ TMS

At TMS, we provide units on swimming as part of our PE curriculum. These take place in Years 4,5 and 6 and take place on consecutive days, taught by local swimming coaches and supported by class teachers/teaching assistants. The aim is to give children access to wider opportunities, a knowledge of water safety and to partake within a broad and balanced PE curriculum. Children will be taught based on their ability and familiarity with swimming, being guided and supported to develop their confidence in the water. This gives children the opportunity to refine their skills and feel comfortable learning at their own pace, with a real sense of achievement waiting for them at the end!
