The cold and wet weather hasn’t been perfect for gardening! But, following a successful application to The Earth Restoration Service, we received fifty bare-root tree saplings ready for planting out. A number of enthusiastic children volunteered to start planting up the first phase of our new wildlife-friendly hedgerow.
Getting a little muddy, they planted a selection of species including: Hawthorn, Field Maple, Dogwood and Guelder Rose, which once established, will provide food and shelter for birds and mammals as well as protection for our new school garden. The children discussed the importance of taking action to help protect and increase the biodiversity on our school grounds and said that they felt they were doing their bit to save the planet!
As it begins to warm up, we will be installing water butts to provide water for the plants in the garden. Thank you also goes to The Cornwall Garden Trust for their generosity by way of a small financial grant to help with costs for this project.
