Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Art – Year 5 – Van Gogh

2nd November 2023 in Creative Team, Year 5

Year 5 have recently finished an amazing unit of learning all about Vincent van Gogh. During this painting unit of learning, we focussed on mark making and the use of colour to create atmosphere.

We loved learning all about Van Gogh – we know about where he was born, his post-impressionism style of painting and all of the different mediums he chose to use. In her short lifetime, he chose to master drawing in black and white first, before introducing colour to his art work.

Once we had learnt all about the artist inspiring our unit of learning, we went on to imitating some of his most famous designs. We loved looking at the details of Starry Night piece and having a go at recreating this ourselves.

Next, we learnt about how to crate atmosphere in our artwork by mixing different hues, tones, shades and tint of colour. Once we had mixed these colours we thought about how the use of colour can change the way a piece of artwork feels.

Having spent time getting to know van Gogh and The Starry Night, it was now time to create our own final piece of art. Using Starry Night as our inspiration we all created our own piece of artwork; each piece demonstrated our knowledge of mark-making and atmosphere, as well as a link to van Gogh. Make sure you have a look at some of our amazing piece of art!

The final step in our learning journey was to evaluate our pieces against our plans – we were all feeling very proud of ourselves. In Year 5, we have also been working on peer feedback and giving our classmates supportive and positive feedback.
