Assemblies : Remembrance

9th November 2023 in Assemblies
In our KS2 assembly on Monday, we shared a beautifully written story around Remembrance. Poppy Field by Michael Morpurgo is a story set in Flanders Fields and follows the story of a young boy called Martens and his family story in this wartime location. The whole story centers around the poem in Flanders Fields which we also shared together.
It has been really special this week to see a number of children looking at the book themselves in class and spending time reading the poem Flanders Fields together.

On Tuesday in assembly, we considered the significance of the Purple poppy as a symbol of remembrance for all of the animals that have served during wartime. We found out about the Dicken Medal that is awarded to animals who have shown considerable bravery and devotion to duty. This medal has been awarded 75 times since 1944 – we were surprised to discover that pigeons have been awarded this medal more than any other animals.

On Wednesday we looked at where in history World Wars 1 and 2 lay, the monarchy at the time and also some of the sources in which we have learned about what life was like in the trenches. Something absolutely beyond our lives currently, we really had to think hard about how tough it would have been: scary, frightening and how much the soldiers needed their friends. Through the years of desolate battlefields, slowly the poppies stared growing, leading us to make links with the beautiful symbol associated with Armistice day today.
