With a focus on KINDNESS, we were thinking in our year group assemblies this week how we can be kind using words, as well as actions – the small things matter. Kindness is an integral part of our TMS rules:
Treat everyone is respect and kindness
Makes sensible choices
Speak with honesty and integrity
In EYFS, Years 1 and 2, we read ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. The amazing story of George the Giant, who used his kindness to help other animals – he really affected their lives and helped them get over their tricky situations. Through being kind, his animal friends really showed their appreciation! If you haven’t got this book at home – it is highly recommended!
In Key Stage 2, we explored the life of Mother Teresa. Being inspired by the work of missionaries from an early age, she committed her life to helping others. Her kindness was overwhelming, and was shown through setting up communities to support the homeless, orphans, the terminally ill as well as feeding the poorest people. Her work started in Calcutta, but quickly spread all over the world. She reached out to people who were shunned by society. She campaigned for the ‘forgotten’ and ensured the ‘poorest of the poor’ lived with dignity, regardless of race, religion or any other circumstance.
“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
She was proclaimed a Saint by the Catholic Church in 2016. People can only be proclaimed a Saint 5 years after the death, and two miracles had to become attributed to that person. We left the assembly with the task to talk through ‘miracles’ with their families and how that belief of the Roman Catholic Church sits with the beliefs of their own families.
Whatever our own beliefs and views on the Catholic Church and saints there is no doubt that the kindness Mother Teresa showed in her life, was something quite special.
“It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in doing it. That makes all the difference.”
