This week in our Monday assembly we looked at the remarkable and record-breaking achievements of Emma Raducanu in the US Open this weekend. As a school, we looked at her background and upbringing, as well as discussing what a year she has had – not only did she win the US open, but she also qualified for Wimbledon and got an A* and an A in her A Levels over the summer. We all agreed that Emma Raducanu was brave, determined, hard-working, competitive and inspirational – a fantastic role model for us all.
On Wednesday assemblies, we introduced our 4 STAR team names: Francis Drake, James Cook, Bessie Coleman and Namira Salim. We talked about the motivation to explore as well as a briefly an overview of their achievements
On Thursday in KS2, we explored the racial segregation in Texas, where Bessie Coleman grew up. The opportunities she missed out on because of her heritage were shocking, but her determination and resilience to reach her dream was inspiring. This then led to the great Sir Francis Drake – what a leader! Him and his crew were instrumental in the greatest explorations of the time. He was also integral to the rise of slavery …
In our KS1 assembly, we discussed our TMS rules:
Treat everyone with respect and kindness
Make thoughtful choices
Speak with honesty and integrity
We talked through how staff will continue to like all our children at TMS throughout their entire time at TMS.. and beyond! Sometimes we all ‘mess up’ and make mistakes – because we are human – we will still like you! Adults are in school to help children learn from things which don’t go always as planned. Sometimes, if children carry on breaking out TMS rules, despite reminders from the adults, children at TMS will get a warning .. and a yellow card if the behaviour doesn’t change. If it still doesn’t change, then there is a red card and there is a chat with Ms Teagle or Mrs Ewart and quite often we may ask parents to come and help out and work out together what is going wrong. But, with help from our TMS team, the children felt is was OK to think positively and everyone can make a change. We may need to ask for help, but we can do it and achieve great things!
