Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Assemblies – week beginning 16.1.23

20th January 2023 in Assemblies, Whole School

On Monday, Mrs Brown gave an assembly about this lovely book. It told the story of how kind Hedgehog was to all his friends, giving away his clothes to everyone when they were cold in the snow, and how the friends repaid his kindness. Very apt to share in assembly as the following day it snowed!

In our KS2 assembly on Tuesday, we learnt all about the new President of Brazil – Luiz Inacio da Silva. In more recent years, the previous president of Brazil had negatively impacted the Amazon Rainforest through deforestation – cutting down large areas of land to use for other means. Coming into power only a couple of weeks ago, the new president has pledged to reach zero deforestation by 2030. Watch this space!

On Wednesday, Mr Bagley took an assembly about the role of maths in our everyday lives.  The children were asked to think about what maths is and where we see it around us. They were finally challenged to think of a job that doesn’t use maths – they really struggled, but came up with some creative suggestions of: stand up comedian; sofa tester; author; lollipop person.  All of these suggestions were countered by someone else suggesting where maths might be a part of the job (not including counting up their wages or hours!).

Also on Wednesday, Mrs Beckett took a Maths assembly with EYFS and KS1. The assembly had a focus on non-standard measurements. We firstly listened to the story ‘If the shoe fits’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsLz-icSu5g , which is a lovely Maths story about length and measuring with non-standard units, where two mice find a shoe and want to know if it will fit in their den before dragging it all the way home…

Following the story we discussed how we could measure the bench in the hall without a ruler. The children decided that we couldn’t measure it with beanbags because they weren’t the same size but we could use the cones as they were the same. The children then estimated how long they thought the bench would be; some said 8 cones long, some said 9, some said 10 and a few children thought more than 10. Haniya came up to the front and measured and we found that the bench measured 10 cones long.

For Thursday’s assemblies, we were really lucky as we had a surprise visitor – Mr Holmes told us a lovely story about a prince. The story had a very special message for us all to take away with us – one of forgiveness
