Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Assemblies – 30.1.23 & 6.2.23

10th February 2023 in Assemblies, Online safety, Whole School

Last week, Mr Rutterford took an assembly which looked at the reasons we read, what reading can do for us, and the incredible journeys our mind can go on without even leaving the comfort of our own home. We also explored some famous readers and the amazing benefits we all get from reading books, magazines, newspapers regularly! Keep reading everyone!

Last week, Mrs Webb took our first assembly in a series called ‘Around the World in 20 assemblies’. To begin with, we looked at the United Kingdom and the four countries which form it. We learnt their capital cities, where they are in the relation to each other and their flags. In our KS2 assembly, we also discussed the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles. Please ask us about this at home to see how much we can remember!

This week and last week, Mrs Ewart used assembly times to introduce us to Poppy, our school dog. We all now know what she likes and dislikes, and how we can keep everyone (including Poppy) happy and safe in school. We will continue to reinforce these messages with the children in school, as we introduce Poppy to school life slowly.

Tuesday was Safer Internet Day, with the theme being ‘Let’s talk about it’ encouraging children to talk about all of their online activities with their trusted adults. By having regular conversations with parents and carers, children are more likely to be open an honest should they run into troubles online.

Wednesday was a debrief after safer internet day and a chance to discuss the things which had been going on in classes.  After this discussion, the children learned about Sadio Mane – a footballer who is changing lives in his home country of Senegal by funding the building of a hospital, school and fuel station as well as providing 4G internet and an allowance for all of the families in his village.  The children talked about the things which they could to to make a difference (both big and small) to other people.

Yesterday, Mr Rutterford gave an assembly on our new author of the month…. Anthony Horowitz! We looked at some of the amazing novels he has written in his long career and watched a short film based around one of his best sellers – The Falcon’s Malteser. Finally, we finished off with a few facts about the man himself and a few words of wisdom… Read more – Write more – Believe in yourself.

In the afternoon, Mrs Beckett shared the Twinkl story ‘Part of the Party’ about a brave Koala called Karri who really wants to go to the Mummy and daughter dance in town but is worried as she has two daddies. Karri sets out on a mission to make every family part of the party. This story introduces the children to different types of families and that every family is different – and also that every family is special. After listening to the story we thought about and discussed the different types of families from the story and also what makes a family special. The children all agreed that…LOVE makes a family special!
