Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
BORN: 1756 / DIED: 1791 (aged 35) / NATIONALITY: Austrian
(Monarchs for England in this time: George II, George III)
Born in Salzburg, Austria in 1756 Mozart is perhaps one of the most recognisable names in classical music writing a large amount of music that influenced and inspired many composers who came after him.
Mozart was son to a violin teacher called Leopold Mozart and started composing music very young. He had an incredible ability to remember music. By the age of 3, Mozart had learned to play a clavier, which was an old-fashioned stringed instrument that had a keyboard. By the age of 5, he was playing the harpsichord and violin. He and his sister Maria Anna (known as Nannerl) travelled all over Europe. He was playing in front of royalty when he was just 6 years old.
When he grew up, Mozart moved to Vienna, and tried to earn a living as a pianist and composer. But he had a lot of trouble handling the fact that he was no longer a child prodigy. Mozart was still a musical genius, but after he stopped being a cute kid, people stopped making a big fuss over him. Back then, musicians were treated like servants, but Mozart did not, and could not think of himself as a servant.
He fell love with Aloysia Weber (a singer), the oldest daughter of a Viennese family of musicians but she declined his proposal. He went on to meet and marry her sister Constanze Weber (also a singer) . They had 6 children together.
Mozart’s music was of a Classical style, and he composed in many different forms: opera, chamber music, symphony and solo concertos. These forms were not new, but Mozart added a level of emotion and technical brilliance which stood him above other composers. He produced 626 works in total.
Mozart was only 35 when he died. During his short life, he composed in all different musical forms, including operas, symphonies, concertos, masses, and chamber music. Mozart is said to have had a major influence on classical music, particularly after his death.
