KS2 Assembly – Florence Nightingale

9th May 2024 in Assemblies

The 12th of May is International Nurses day, and in assembly on Wednesday with Mrs Ewart we found out about Florence Nightingale and why she can be considered a significant figure in history.

She is remembered as being the ‘founder of modern nursing’ due to her pioneering work during the Crimean War, where she was able to reduce the number of war casualties by introducing simple strategies such as the nurses washing their hands and cleaning the wards where the soldiers were treated. She also created a Nursing College at St Thomas’ Hospital, and this legacy continues today, as modern day nurses can still train at the Florence Nightingale School of Midwifery and Nursing in London.
