KS2 Author of the half term – Michael Morpurgo

16th April 2026 in English

Michael Morpurgo is one of Britain’s best‑loved children’s authors, famous for writing stories that are full of adventure, heart, and imagination. He was born in 1943 and before becoming a writer, he worked as a primary school teacher. It was while telling stories to his pupils that he realised how powerful a good book could be.

Michael has written over 150 books, many inspired by history, nature, and real people. Some of his most popular stories include War Horse, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Private Peaceful, and The Butterfly Lion. His books often explore big ideas like friendship, courage, war, and kindness — but always in a way that young readers can enjoy and understand. Several of his stories, including War Horse, have been turned into films or stage productions.

Away from writing, Michael Morpurgo is passionate about helping others. He and his wife founded Farms for City Children, a charity that gives children from cities the chance to experience life on a farm firsthand.

For his amazing contribution to children’s literature, he became the Children’s Laureate from 2003 to 2005. Today, Michael Morpurgo’s stories continue to inspire readers of all ages to care about the world and the people around them.
