This week I have been lucky enough, alongside Mrs Vale, to watch and be part of mathematics lessons across all of Key Stage 2 – this was part of our regular monitoring schedule of development lessons. It was a privilege to witness some excellent teaching but most of all the fantastic learning attitudes of our children, who showed perseverance and resilience in plentiful supply. At the start of the year all classes are working on developing their understanding of place value and it was really interesting to see how this key area of mathematics progressed in complexity through the different cohorts from looking at 10 more than and 10 less than through to working with numbers over a million. The TMS approach of ‘do it, secure it and deepen it’ was evident as the children grappled with building their fluency and then progressed through to more complex reasoning and problem solving questions.
We are looking forward to being part of Key Stage 1 lessons in a couple of weeks.
