Really good to see so many smiling faces and hear so many sea shanty voices in music this week. More sea shanty singing this week bringing us all together as we sing in our homes and at school.
KS2 – WELLERMAN – JOIN AND SING WITH THIS COMMUNITY PROJECT
Last week we looked at the song ‘The Wellerman‘, adding in some body percussion parts and this week we returned to sing this song together and also to tell you of an exciting opportunity which you could be part of.
The Longest Johns, a Bristol based, acapella folk music band, born out of a mutual love of traditional folk songs and shanties, are asking for people to send in recordings / film of them singing ‘Wellerman’ for them to then bring together in a Community Wellerman Project.
If you’d like to join in then head over to this link the Wellerman Community Project . To join in the project you record yourself singing the chorus part of ‘The Wellerman’ whilst watching either their film or listening to their recording. All is explained at the link. You don’t need to worry about the quality of your recording or film as they’ll edit it all together. You will need an adult to help you and to fill in the permissions form. It would be great to have some Threemilestone shanty singers joining in the project!

When we are all back in school together I am REALLY looking forward to singing these shanties together.
KS2 – LEAVE HER JOHNNY
We also looked at ‘Leave her Johnny’ which The Longest Johns released last month as their first community project.
Leave her Johnny was, traditionally, the last shanty the crew would sing before getting off the boat. It was used when warping (pulling) the ship into the pier, or when pumping the bilges for the last time.
Although it at first sounds like the crew is sentimental about leaving the ship, the lyrics describe the horrible conditions that they suffered through during the voyage. Since it was the last song of the journey, the sailors took the opportunity to vent their feelings about how they were treated. The ‘she’ in the song is referring to the boat.
Well done for singing and playing along with ‘What shall we do with the drunken sailor’. Keep singing and playing along at home. We found some great percussion sounds to accompany us; with different sounds for the different rhythms and also thinking about how loud and soft we would play.
KS1 – PANCAKE SONG
Some great ideas for lyrics in our pancake song, as we get ready for Shrove Tuesdays which is next Tuesday. Have a go at making up your own pancake song using the attached sheet. Singing continues on Fridays with a 2pm session for KS2 and 2.30pm for KS1. With KS1 we’ve been singing lots of fun songs and also a lovely calm lullaby. All are very welcome to join us. Links for Friday afternoon singing sessions are available from your class teacher.
