For our musician of the month for June and July, we are proud to celebrate world music as a powerful way of exploring diversity, creativity and connection. Music is a universal language that helps children understand different cultures, traditions and ways of life, fostering respect and curiosity about the wider world, which we know that children at TMS are fascinated by. Through our world music focus, pupils experience a rich variety of sounds, instruments and styles—from African drumming and Brazilian samba to Indian classical music and Chinese folk traditions. This not only broadens their cultural awareness but also deepens their understanding of key musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony and texture. By exploring how music is created and performed across the globe, children develop both their musical skills and their appreciation of diversity, helping them to see themselves as part of a vibrant, interconnected world.
Here are some examples:
West Africa (Ghana) – Traditional drumming & song
India – Ravi Shankar / Hindustani classical
Indonesia – Gamelan
Brazil – Samba
United States – Duke Ellington / Jazz
Middle East – Arabic Maqam tradition
China – Traditional folk / pentatonic music
