AMONG US

What is it?

Among Us is a multiplayer online game played on mobile devices (tablets, iPads, phones) where participants work together to try to find the saboteur in the group while completing their own tasks set by the game.  Violence is cartoon-like and there is no gore, although the killing of players is a key theme of the game.

Where might my child be accessing this game?

The game is available on mobile devices and PC.

What do I need to be aware of when deciding if I should let my child play?

While the game itself has a grisly premise, the graphics are cartoon-esque and non-offensive.  The same, however, cannot be said for some of the people who play online.  The game is unmoderated and users can set their names to be whatever they wish – sometimes choosing offensive names for themselves.  The chat function is also unmoderated and, as such is open to abuse from users.

Is it suitable for primary school aged children?

Commonsensemedia.org rate this game at 8+.  As with all online content, if children are to access it, this should be done in an open part of the house.  Maintaining a dialogue with your child about their experiences online will help them to come to you should they encounter things which make them feel uncomfortable.

As part of the game involves lying to the other players, commonsensemedia.org recommend that you talk to your children about these points:

Is the impact of the violence in Among Us increased since you are actively hunting and murdering players if you’re the impostor? Is the impact lessened by the cartoonish nature of the visuals, even though bodies are left behind?

Why is it important to tell the truth in games like Among Us? When is it important to lie to accomplish your goals in a game that relies upon deception? Is it OK to have a game that relies upon deception at the core of its gameplay?
