Today, our Year 3 children were visited by Katie and Charlotte from Penlee Gallery and Museum to support their history learning about the Romans. The session was engaging, hands-on and inspired lots of curiosity and discussion.
The workshop was divided into three exciting parts. First, we explored the question “Did the Romans come to Cornwall?” and examined a range of artefacts and evidence, including roof tiles, pottery, coins and ruins, and studied a map of Roman sites across Cornwall. This helped us think carefully about historical clues and how historians use evidence to draw conclusions about the past.
Next, we had the opportunity to handle real Roman artefacts, such as tools, plates, bathing tools and mosaic tiles. To think like true historians, we were encouraged to ask three key questions: What is it? What is it made from? What is it used for? We all came up with some really creative and well-considered ideas, showing excellent historical thinking skills.
The final part of the session focused on Roman coins. We learned about the messages and symbols shown on coins and what they tell us about Roman life and leadership. Using this knowledge, we then designed and created their own Roman pin badges.
A big thank you to Katie and Charlotte from Penlee Gallery and Museum for delivering such an informative and enjoyable session. Well done to all the children for their enthusiasm, curiosity and excellent behaviour throughout the day.
