With just about 3 weeks of Remote Learning under our belt, it is really important that we gather as much feedback as possible so that we can adapt and amend if needed according to the need. We know that this is a very different lockdown situation than previously, and the expectations on learning and accountability are far greater, but we aim to give a manageable timetable, with the focus on communication with your child’s teacher. There are many other amazing things happening in other schools, and we can never put into place something which can be bespoke to every single family. What we have done, is planned according to our knowledge and feedback from the previous lockdown, to accommodate our 423 children, ensuring that when we return (whenever that may be) our children can continue seamlessly. We also know that inevitably all families will suffer a little from Remote Learning fatigue and these will dip at different times. What we are wanting to gather are overall thoughts.

The purpose of this questionnaire is for feedback. If there are things which are really working well, please let us know, so that we know the successes of particular aspects.

If you have more than one child, please fill out a form for each child, as the experiences for each one will be different. We will then take all feedback to staff, and ensure we share the positives with staff, who are working really hard to respond to need on a daily basis. We will also discuss ways to adapt and explore whether we are able to bring new ideas into the mix.

29th January 2021 – The results

Thank you to all families who found time to fill out our questionnaire. We had a 20% return, and the most important thing to us, is that the responses are very similar, giving us a clear indication of how well we are doing and some ideas on how to improve.

The generic questions are shared below, and if there have been specific questions, then your class teacher will contact you, or please contact them.

We are thrilled to have such a positive response to the provision that we offer at TMS. It reflects how hard the teachers are working in following the planned curriculum, as well as responding to need, giving your children as much face to face interaction as possible.

Despite most children wanting to be at school (and adults wanting this too!), there are many positives which are coming out of learning at home. Parents/carers have commented how much they are learning about the curriculum, as well as how their children are learning – what they find difficult, and what they shine in. It is exciting for some to see how teachers break down the learning, and also how their child interacts with others over Zoom.

Children are shining in their resourcefulness and independence, taking their new style learning very seriously. Some have created their own learning spaces at home and come equipped with whiteboards and exercise books! Adults are seeing first hand the excitement they have for learning and the resilience needed to learn new things. A massive positive from this Lockdown you have told us, is the structure that our teachers give the children, which comes with an element of flexibility – to continue learning in the evenings and weekend – if that is more convenient for families.  And of course, permission to learn in their pyjamas, and to eat all day long!

We know that this situation is not ideal, and as a school, we really appreciate the kind, encouraging words you give to staff regularly. We all know that working together and a high level of communication will be most beneficial to your children’s progress. The challenges you face at home are largely due to siblings and working at home – none of which are ideal, and there are often no easy solutions.

General Comments and moving forward

Busy households!

As teachers in school, we never know what is going on ‘behind the scenes’ in everybody’s personal lives. Please let your teacher know any individual circumstances which prevent children from accessing the learning, or preventing the children from doing any learning tasks at home. We can come up with a plan together – which is realistic and supportive. There are so many different pressures: siblings and grown ups working from home being the main ones. Just let us know – there are always some ways in which we can support you!

Wider Curriculum

Lots of families are supportive and excited by the range of curriculum which is on offer, including the PE and music led by Miss Andrew and Mrs Browning – our specialist teachers.

To improve this, families have suggested that we increase our options, to include cookery, more fitness, suggested more hands on activities to have time away from the screen, arts and crafts. It was also suggested by many that there could be more writing opportunities – so children don’t lose the skills of handwriting, being replaced by typing. Watch this space!

Tutorials in Y1-6

This area was a real positive across the school: having this quality time, in small groups for focused conversations about learning. There were lots of comments about children gaining confidence in speaking in these sessions and the ability to interact with ‘Zoom’ is really improving.

Teachers will continue to be aware of the pace of learning and if there is any learning which the children are confused by or want to go over again, please either say in the tutorial, or email in the class teacher afterwards.

There were also positive comments about the links and short film clips (especially in maths) posted, so that families can go over the teaching points again after the tutorials.

Guidance to families

There was a lot of positivity about the communication with teachers. There have been lots of conversations with families about how Google Classroom works and how to access different parts to it in KS2.  If you are still unsure, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher for advice!

Time to complete tasks

Whilst for some families the amount of  learning set was absolutely fine for their child, some parents felt at times it could be too much. As always, we would say to prioritise the learning, listen to your children, and then let your class teacher know if things are too much. Sometimes life (and younger siblings) just gets in the way!

1:1 sessions

There has been a query about any 1:1 sessions for children, or parents. Because of the Safeguarding procedures, we are unable to offer 1:1 sessions with children. Sometimes, some children stay behind a couple of minutes after their tutorial with their grown up, to have a quick conversation with the teacher. This can’t always happen, otherwise they will be behind schedule!

We are arranging ‘Face 2 face’ sessions the week before half term: please look on the newsletter for more details.

Again, the support which has been given to the school in the last 4 weeks has been incredible. We will continue to work hard to adapt our provision, taking on feedback from children and families to improve our practice.

And to the hopeful parent who has requested a week’s all inclusive holiday to the Bahamas (without the children!) … sadly, due to covid, we are unable to action this request!!!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you feel there is anything additional we can do to support you, or your children.

Ms Teagle
