This term, our STAR teams are headed up with Olympians with Cornish connections. We believe strongly that all children can achieve great things if we inspire, encourage dreams, and develop resilience and determination in the children at TMS.

All our 4 Olympians were at some point sat in educational settings in Cornwall and encouraged to dream … and that is certainly what they have done – and achieved their goals!

Helen Glover is leading the green team! A natural athlete who completed at a national level when at school, in tennis, athletics and hockey, even before trying out rowing, is really something to aspire to. After retiring, she is planning a comeback to compete in Tokyo 2021. And – a trained teacher!

Sir Ben Ainslie is fronting the blue team. One of the most successful sailors in history spent time learning his craft in Falmouth and attending Truro School. The winner of so many Olympics medals, races and records – his achievements are definitely something 

Jonathan Fox, a successful Paralympian, studied at Cornwall College. Having Cerebral Palsy absolutely did not create a barrier to his achievements. Being involved in swimming as a child as part of his physiotherapy, a talent was spotted. With his natural talent, combined with his competitive spirit and love of the sport, he worked hard, resulting in achieving a gold medal at the Olympics. 

Cassie Patten – another Cornish athlete with a water connection! Born, schooled and living in North Cornwall, Cassie has actually swum around the country with Mr Wake! She won a bronze in the 10km open water freestyle event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She is now a coach and inspiring others to live their dream.

We are really excited to be learning about these athletes this term, ending our learning in July focusing on the Tokyo Olympics. If you have any personal connections with other Cornish Olympians, please share!!
