Where learning is fuelled by creativity

String Quartet visits TMS

26th September 2022 in Creative Team
Last week a string quartet with players from IMS Prussia Cove came into school.  They started the afternoon working with the children who are in our school string group and then they played to all of year 3.  After this they gave another concert in the hall to years 4, 5 and 6.
We learnt a little about each of the players (Lesley, Laura. Millie and Tim) and their instruments.  Patrick Bailey introduced the quartet and it was really good to find out a little about each piece, the composers and the music.   We heard them play quartet music by Mozart (our composer of the month!), Caroline Shaw, Haydn, Dvorak and a Russian composer called Shostakovich. They also accompanied our string group playing a piece called ‘Chicken on a Fencepost’ with their own arrangement of the accompaniment. Our school string players did SO well and it was a real treat to hear the quartet and welcome them to our school.
In class, following the performance, we discussed the afternoon and Sennen Cove class wrote reviews.  Here are some of their comments:
“Today we saw Lesley on violin 1, Millie on the second violin, Tim was on the viola and Laura on the cello.  I thought it was really good.  My favourite was the war piece, it was mad and by Shostakovich.”

“I was able to imagine something is happening just by the music”

“I liked the war music because it was very dramatic and they were very good at playing it”
“It must be fun to play violin and viola on stage in front of so many people”
“I liked the first piece they played as it was nice and calming”
“They were utterly amazing”
“When we were spotting the melody in the Mozart piece I noticed it was mostly being played by the first violin.  The war piece was my favourite because it had a lot of energy.”
“I would recommend it to other people, they would enjoy it.  “
“I hope soon I’ll be as good as them”
“I really liked playing my violin with the string quartet”
