Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Summer reading challenge 2024

21st July 2024 in Language Team, Our Community

The Summer Reading Challenge is taking place in all libraries in Cornwall. It’s FREE to sign up your children to the Challenge, and FREE to join the library service, if you are not already members. The aim is for children to read at least 6 library books over the summer break.

The Challenge is designed to keep children reading over the long summer holidays to prevent a dip in reading levels in the autumn and to promote reading for pleasure as the children choose the books that they read for the Challenge. The theme this year is called “Marvellous Makers” celebrating creativity and the arts, but children can choose to read books on any subject, and they can be fiction or non-fiction books at an appropriate level for them.

Visit a library in Cornwall to sign up. The nearest libraries to Threemilestone are Truro, Redruth, St Agnes and Perranporth.  Your child will receive a poster/book log sheet and needs to borrow 2 books from the library to begin.

After your child has read the 2 books, ask them to complete (or help them to complete) the book log with the name of the author and book title and ask them to give it a 1, 2 or 3 star rating, depending on how much they enjoyed it.

Return these 2 books to the library and show your book log to a member of staff or library volunteer. Your child will receive some stickers and a set of temporary tattoos as incentive prizes. Borrow another 2 books and repeat the process. After having read 4 books your child will receive some air-drying modelling clay and stickers and having read 6 books, they will receive the final set of stickers and a Marvellous Makers keyring.

The Challenge runs until Saturday 14th September and all children that the library record as having read 6 books within this time will receive a Marvellous Makers colour certificate with their name printed on it, delivered to Threemilestone school in the autumn term.

The Challenge is for children aged 4-11 years old, but there is also a Mini Challenge for younger siblings under 4, so that they can join in the fun too.
