Today’s training focused on the power of cold calling, building on our work from the recent TPAT conference day. We explored how purposeful cold calling ensures that all children are thinking deeply during lessons, rather than allowing some to quietly coast along. While we are fortunate to have many enthusiastic pupils with hands straight in the air, eager to contribute, we discussed the importance of resisting the urge to always select them and instead using our cold calling technique. Perfecting our cold calling technique helps us ensure that every child is engaged, accountable and actively doing the thinking. Through group rehearsal, our teachers practised making this approach automatic and seamless, recognising that effective teaching is complex and requires key strategies to become second nature.
