TMS Sea Shanties – Falmouth Festival

24th June 2022 in Creative Team

We are SO proud of our Year 4 TMS Sea Shanty Singers who sang at the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival this Saturday.

A group of our singers and a group of singers from Mithian school joined together to sing on the Prince of Wales Pier on the small stage to an audience made up of the local community, family and friends.  Our dream, since starting to sing sea shanties together, has been to sing next to the sea and with the wind blowing, waves lapping and at times the rain coming down (!) we certainly felt like we were at sea!

The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival was founded in 2003 by Falmouth Shout, a group of singers whose mission is to keep alive the history of Tall Ships and the days of sail by performing sea shanties, songs of the sea and Cornish songs.  We are one of the first groups of children to perform at the festival and it was really brilliant to be part of such an amazing event and to perform to the community.

We sang five songs and have really been enjoying learning the lyrics and the history of each of the songs at school. We have also been enjoying adding in some harmonies and singing some of them together, forming two parts.

All of the year 4 children have been learning the songs with Mrs Browning in music sessions and also singing (a lot!) in class (and at camp!) with Mr Rutterford and Mrs Vale.    Following a visit to Mithian School, some of Mithian School children came along to join us and it was great for the TPAT Sea Shanty Singers to sing all together.

After our singing, some of us watched or joined in with the parade through Falmouth and went on to see and hear some more sea shanty singing from other bands and groups who were performing in the festival .

Falmouth – thank you for having us and we look forward to coming back
