We have had an amazing day celebrating World Earth Day 2021!
Our EYFS children focused on really noticing the environment around us, and how to use this to create some fantastic artwork!
Year 1 received a letter from Rosy the Tree who needed our help! We were all busy discussing how we could help Rosy when some more letters appeared from animals who relied on Rosy to survive. As a class we thought about why different animals needed and how we could use less wood products. We read the story ‘
There’s a Rang-Tan in my Bedroom‘, and discussed how palm oil is produced and looked at more products we did not realise contained the palm oil.
After looking into the damage an pollution being done to our oceans and wildlife, Year 2 decided to write a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Johnson, demanding that action be taken immediately! The children discussed what they found upsetting about the current condition of our planet, and put together 60 letters that expressed their dissatisfaction very clearly. They addressed the letters to 10 Downing Street and they will be posted today. We look forward the the Prime Minister’s response!
Children in the Year 3 classes were challenged to come up with an idea for a machine which would improve the environment. With their inventors hats on, they went into teams to design a solution. They then presented this to the class and all the children voted to find their favourite creation.
Our Year 4 classrooms were covered in rubbish and in the dark for World Earth Day. Discussions were had on how we as humans were impacting the earth and the children creating inventions to prevent global warming by thinking about the use of plastics.
Year 5 spent the morning thinking about and looking at the impact humans have had on our Earth over the past century. We were all quite shocked about some of the lazy (a word the class decided on!) choices humans make every day and created some lovely information about Earths about how we can change. The writing was supposed to be hidden but they all had so much to say the Earths did not quite cover them up! We also wrote a reply letter to a chameleon apologising for the human impact on the world but highlighting all the changes being made.

Year 6 celebrated World Earth Day by creating some nature themed clay prints and delivering passionate speeches on environmental issues. We headed outside to collect a selection of leaves and flowers with intricate designs, which we then printed into clay. Keep your eyes peeled for these coming home tomorrow all carefully painted. For the rest of the day, all of Year 6 chose an environmental issue they were passionate about – we researched, planned, organised and presented our information. All of the adults in Year 6 were so impressed with the presentation skills, confidence and team work on show this afternoon – Well done Team 6!
And we even had a TMS gang out on a litter pick over Easter Holidays!
Have a look at our pictures!
