On Tuesday, all of Key Stage One went on an adventure to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Because of the connection between the gardeners and World War One, Heligan holds a great deal of significance to our STAR learning (The Red Poppy) this half term.
The Year 1 children thoroughly enjoyed their day which links to their class reader ‘A Song for Will’. We travelled through the gardens exploring their insect theme. This involved a spider tunnel, as well as identifying bugs by their sound and smell. We then explored the gardens that were lost and enjoyed looking at the huge variety of pumpkins on show. We joined with the Year 2 children for lunch and had a fantastic time playing together on the adventure playground. We followed the woodland trail on the way back to the coach, spotting the mud maid and giant’s head.
The children in Year 2 started their Heligan journey by weaving their way down the Woodland Walk, stopping to take in the marvellous sights as they went. We saw the Giant’s Head, the Mud Maid and the Grey Lady. After we had ventured down through the Jungle, we stopped for lunch together with Year 1 and had a go on the fantastic play equipment.
When we arrived in the gardens, we had the opportunity to see where the gardeners had worked and grown up before going off to fight. Amazingly, the names that some of the men engraved into the buildings are still there today!
Everyone had a brilliant time, the weather was perfect and the children found out lots about going off to fight in the Great War. Well done Key Stage One!
