Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Year 4 mummification and canopic jars … ugh.

28th September 2019 in Humanities Team, Year 4

As part of our STAR learning this term on the Ancient Egyptians, Year 4 have been learning all about the process of mummification. We had great fun performing our experiment on mummifying apples, which is currently in progress, and we are really looking forward to seeing the results next week on whether (with our salt and bicarbonate soda mix) we have prevented decay!

As you’ll see in these photos, we have made our very own canopic jars too! Canopic jars were the four gods (the sons of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the afterlife) and they held the intestine, stomach, lungs and liver. Once we had chosen a canopic jar god, we sketched our designs and brought them to life with sculpting clay. It took two afternoons to get the finished result – but we are super happy with them.

As if that wasn’t enough, on Friday we got to bring in a teddy from home to mummify!

Well done year 4s for an amazing week!
