Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Year 5 Fieldwork – St Agnes

3rd May 2024 in Humanities Team
The children in Year 5 have had the most fantastic day getting out to St Agnes and carrying out their geography fieldwork. In class we have been working towards answering the question: How do coastlines and their uses change over time? The final part of our unit of learning, saw us taking a trip to St Agnes to see features of the coastline in real life and to interact with local businesses and see how tourism and the coastline affects them.
In the morning, we walked through St Agnes, down towards the beach where we set up camp for a morning of data collection. We spent time working as geographers and cartographers, drawing our own observational sketches and sketch maps of the area, we also took photographs to go alongside our maps. Once this was complete, we gathered the litter picking equipment and carried out our own beach clean – we were so impressed with how clean the beach already was so we only managed to collect a few bits and pieces.
After a lunch overlooking the beach (what a view), we headed up in to town to carry out our questionnaires. All of the local businesses we visited were incredibly welcoming, they answered our questions with honestly and gave us a great insight into what it is like to own a business in St Agnes. All of the adults on the tip are so proud of how well the children represented our school – they were polite, respectful, engaged and enthusiastic.
Thank you so much to all of the businesses we visited for your time, to all of the adults from school for taking us and to all of the children who were absolute superstars all day! What a fabulous Friday!
