Where learning is fuelled by creativity

Year 5 Rocket Day!

5th January 2023 in STEM Team, Year 5

Today, the children in year 5 launched rockets (to try and reach space!) from the back field.  The children worked in groups of twos and threes led by Mr Slater from the RAF (Royal Air Force).

While doing this project, the children learned about a rocket’s center of gravity (to keep it from spinning), about its trajectory (using fins to keep it going straight) and ensuring the fuselage was tight so no air escaped during the launch (but not too tight so that it didn’t get stuck – or even blow up!).

The project was challenging but the children overcame these challenges by using excellent team-working skills.  The children all showed resilience and kindness towards each other after our first batch of testing and were all able to make improvements to their design before the final countdown.

The winning rocket travelled 38m in windy conditions and was created by Inis and Lilia.
